Substation Electrician Tech I

Position Summary:  

Zachry is currently seeking Substation Electricians in Lubbock, TX. The employee will perform job duties and responsibilities safely, efficiently, and accurately.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and test equipment and circuits to identify malfunctions or defects, using wiring diagrams and testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or ammeters.
  • Consult manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering personnel to troubleshoot and solve equipment problems and to determine optimum equipment functioning.
  • Prepare and maintain records detailing tests, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Repair, replace, and clean equipment and components such as circuit breakers, Transformers, PTs, CTs, or any related substation equipment.  
  • Notify facility personnel of equipment shutdowns.
  • Test insulators and bushings of equipment by inducing voltage across insulation, testing current and calculating insulation loss.
  • Disconnect voltage regulators, bolts, and screws, and connect replacement regulators to high-voltage lines.
  • Run signal quality and connectivity tests for individual cables, and record results.
  • Maintain inventories of spare parts for all equipment, requisitioning parts as necessary.
  • Test oil in circuit breakers and transformers for dielectric strength, refilling oil periodically.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have good aptitude and manual dexterity.
  • Knowledge and experience with hand and power tools.
  • Ability to work with others – team player.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must have a Class A CDL or the ability to obtain one within 3 months of being hired.
  • Ability to travel out of town 70% of the time
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen and motor vehicle registration

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or Vocational Certificates in Power / Electrical Technology or related on the job construction experience
  • Field experience in Mechanical, Electrical, or Construction
  • 1-2 years of hands on electrical experience, preferably in substations
  • Experience with Doble, Megger and SCADA
  • Internal or residential commercial electrical experience

Physical Demands:   

Employee will be required to communicate in person, via telephone, email, use of arm/hand steadiness, manual dexterity, finger dexterity, multi limb coordination, oral expression, and comprehension. Position assignment will be based on construction sites and industrial facilities requiring mobility (on ground and at heights) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and work boots. May be required to lift, carry and move objects safely. 

Work Environment

Employee will work in multiple environments including an office, warehouse and in a trailer or building on construction sites.  On construction sites noise levels will be moderate to high.  Job site will contain: light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment and tools, people standing, walking, sitting, signaling and talking, bells whistles and alarms. Weather conditions ranging from warm/hot – cool/cold and occasional rain.  May be required to work in close, confined spaces or in different elevations for a long period of time. Noise levels will be moderate to high.
